Having been spiked once too often, I understand your reservations, we had a sprawling monster Of one behind the house when we moved in … Beloved by longtail tits but not by me. The ones left in the secondary hedgerow, behind the grass hedge are kept in check!
A prickly character but worth it.

Yes it is, I guess that’s why someone planted them in the hedgerow to start with. There’s a lot of berberis and holly too.

Unlike most people I actually love Berberis – lovely shrub with year round interest. Looks good with the grass too!
