Me too, hope it’s a sign of good things to come. Also, wondering if the prevalence of natives/alien ladybirds isn’t both a sign of mild winter and aphids not far behind?
I haven’t seen any greenfly yet, they usually appear on euphorbia first. There’s usually some overwintering in the cosy greenhouse on the cannas, I shall go and take a look!
Hmm, I must admit I have been aware of some off and on in the greenhouse here, so will have to try and deter them with some soapy water in case they are planning to get out of hand ;)
I have also seen plenty of ladybirds in the garden, although I haven’t been counting spots. I think a cold winter kills the good bugs as well as the baddies.
Yes, that’s likely. The harlequins seem to gather around the window frames in surprisingly large numbers, I’ve heard they can be quite a nuisance indoors too. We see an increasing number of different coloured ones, they’re bigger than the native ones too.
I need to pay closer attention to the ladybugs (US slang) this summer. I know we also have invaders with more spots than the natives but it’s too early for them yet.
It’s easy to overlook these little garden helpers, isn’t it? I didn’t realise that there’s an even rarer, smaller 4-spot ladybird native to the UK until recently.
Each year there are more and more harlequins. They are pretty though.

Yes, same here. Isn’t it an apt name for the range of colours they come in?

I have noticed a great number of ladybirds already. Perhaps we will get a hot Summer (please)

The jury seems to be out on them, doesn’t it? I suspect you might be right about the aphids!

I would not have spotted the difference if you hadn’t pointed it out.
