They’re very common where we live, they move in to nest in the burrows of wood mice. In sunny summers they fade to an almost unrecognisable uniform beige. They start again each year, so this must have been a ‘new’ one.
Thank you kindly, it was a question of sheer, delightful luck. I’m so pleased to hear that honey bees like these tree peony flowers too, so far I’ve only noticed bumblebees on them. It’s good to see that the deep goblets seem to protect the pollen laden anthers from rain.

What a great photo Kate. I had never noticed how hairy these bees are. To be honest I didn’ t know they were Carder bees. So thank you.

Thanks. Of all the bumblebees in the garden carder bees seem to be the most camera shy, so I was pleased with this one.

Brilliant. You timed that so well! I was peering at the Paeonia luteas at Wimpole on Monday, but only saw honey bees on them.
