Acer palmatum (unknown) edged with Hakonechloa macra ‘Albovariegata’.

Makes a sharp autumn contrast and, as a neat edging, hides a multitude of hard landscaping sins😉

More harmonious, are the plumes of Miscanthus sinensis ‘Adagio’.

In turn, bamboos act as an evergreen grassy backdrop.

Right now, it’s one of my favourite spots to sit and stare.
I’m not surprised it’s your favourite spot at the moment, it’s gorgeous! Love the contrast of the Acer with all it’s different companions.

Absolutely stunning Kate. What a great sitting place. At this time of the year, I wish that I had filled my garden with acers.

Don’t we all? Even the colourful skirts of leaf litter they cast is charming – well, that’s my excuse for not rushing to clear it up.

Not really my doing, Yvonne, as they’re all from south east Asia they have a natural empathy with each other. But, it is very nice of you to say so.

The grasses are proving to be the glue that holds the garden together, Cathy. I had this acer, albeit as a whispy looking thing in a pot, for nearly ten years before I planted it here.

Oh that was certainly worth waiting for then!

I was lucky it forgave me, though acers can do well in pots (with extra TLC) I hadn’t exactly looked after it well.

What a lovely comment, thank you Christina. Hakonechloa do so well in shady, tricky spots in my garden – the variegated ones are like beacons, they add invaluable splashes of light and colour.

Really lovely. The bamboos work so well with everything else. I must try some here.

They do, don’t they? I think it’s worth thinking about trenching and/investing in bamboo membrane to contain their spread – I’m told it takes up to 7 years for the running habit to develop.

Quite glorious, Kate. What a corker of a tree. And the contrast with the grasses is fabulous. I can completely understand why it’s your one of your favourite spots!

So many great combinations. I do like the acer against the bamboo. It looks a fantastic place to sit and enjoy the ambience. That smoke bush is wonderful as well.

Thanks Alison, well spotted, the contrast of the wonderful burgundy smoke bush was key to building this little corner. There are a few nice cotinus specimens we inherited with the garden, someone had a good eye for colour.
