It is Brian, the pinnate leaves are a greyish green with serrated edges. Before it comes into flower, the strong mound of foliage looks very similar to Melianthus major.
Yes, compared to other species I grow this one has proved to be a handsome thug, it has spread to occupy 4 square feet with no signs of stopping. I really should tackle it next spring!
I do love Sanguisorba but sadly lost two of my finest in last year’s drought. ‘Stand up comedian’ and a pink one are doing fine though as they’re in better soil. The latter even produced a seedling, so here’s hoping…how is your dog, Kate? We’re having a lot of heartache with our baby as she has developed cancer and she has only just turned seven.
Oh, Annette, I’m so sorry to hear your baby is not well, so young too. I do hope that the prognosis is not too bad. Poppy is just showing signs of slowing up, 11 months into the 12 ‘long odds’ we were advised of last August. She’s done so well, each and every extra day has been a big bonus.
Oh I likeit don’t know it tho” I be the bees love it!

You’re quite right, Yvonne. Bees prefer this fluffy form to the bobbly ones, it’s a good food source for moth and butterfly larvae too.

What a lovely big clump – I had no success with sanguisorbia up to now but do now have a couple that look as if they are settling in
